Most Walmarts (US anyway) have in stock Shell Rotella 15W-40 (4 quarts 3.8L) for around $14 USD and Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W-50 ~$26 USD (5 quarts/4.7L); both have 1200 or more of ZDDP IIRC.

Mobil 1 synthetic has 1000 ppm zddp.
It did not do well in scar testing.
Mobil 1 vtwin oil did ok in testing. I'm not sure what the zddp level is in the Vtwin oil, couldn't find that info.

Unfortunately, Mobil 1 Racing 4T 15W50 as sold in the EU, is not mentioned:

Its at this point in this eternal discussion I mention that real answer to lubrication Castrol R:rolleyes: obviously we used it on the Goodwood bike but a little known fact we used it in the gear box as well (after reassembly)
After the first meeting we tried it, when we drained the box it came out black! subsequently it was as clear as when we put it in.
Of course its not for the faint hearted I see its over £15.50 a litre:eek:
how do they put it "Your worth it!

Castrol R tested quite well up there, but not top of heap.
These engines probably never need top of heap, even when run hard.
It's just nice to know the relative placings of the various oils, especially when you start using very high lift cams then adding a thousand rpm or so to the factory redline.

Spares Company have the filters but min order is £20 I think.
Sorry, a bit late to this thread…
The £20 limit is just for orders via the web site. The other day I wanted a few clutch shims and ordered them over the phone just fine.

All Mobil 1 oils are synthetic, but are not otherwise necessarily the same. In a post #43, Paul Coene pasted in a page from the Mobil Oil web site that lists a number of their oils and gives the ZDDP numbers.

The 15W-50 I mentioned is last item on page 3 and shows 1200 Phos, 1300 Zinc and recommended for Racing and Flat Tappet applications.

Sorry, quite right, there are many versions of Mobil1. The tester just tested 2 types of Mobil 1 as he had many other oils to test.
The one type was the cheaper car oil available at Walmart etc. From the link, it had only 800 ppm phos and 900 zinc. It didn't offer much protection during the scar test.
The V twin oil tested shows 1600 phos and 1750 zinc. It did reasonably well in testing, although not as well as some oils with around 1200 ppm.
According to one of the oil specialists who was interested in the testing, somewhere around 1200 ppm is ideal for protection. Too much zddp causes problems. I've forgotten why.
One very expensive Redline oil made for older engines boasts about its 2200 ppm zddp.
It did very poorly in testing.
