Yes, but with a flange around the smooth section to hold the ends of two or three springs. What is the OD of the smooth section?

No problem. My machinist has a couple of those and I just got a 1 foot piece of 2.5 inch round bar to keep him busy.

Yes, that is what I want. I am going to expand the end of the pipe to slip over the flange and machine the inside to include an anti-reversion trap.
