Didn't the pre war "A"s have the longer thread body gearbox as well.........

Having put my specs on, it's difficult to see [on the images I have] if the "open" D speedo box is a long version or short like the C.
The "upside down" "enclosed" D is a long one.
Every day's a learner.

My D Shadow has it's original speedo gearbox and it's just like on a B or C.

No. They had the shorter type just like the seriesB & C. If you fitted a long body to series A it will throw the solid tube speedo cable out at a slight angle which is not good for fitting to the speedo.

You are correct Erik my handsome, when Colin Jenner had Conways at Fox pit Farm he got had a load of XWD long drives but they had the out put anti clockwise so I converted a brake plate with the mounting on the left hand side and that was before the 1999 international and still like it £5 and now £400 plus from VOCSC, how prices have gone up.
