What I heard was that Renold went to rollers closed over from flat stock and this form did not cope with the central generator drive. For that reason folks went with properly made Tsubaki triplex chain. There is probably information on this somewhere in Clevtrev's memory.

I am very puzzled by the number of triplex primary chains that seem to have broken, it doesn't seem to occur on anything else, could this be a result of the ESA not being up to the job, in fact adding shock loads to the chain.
Do not run them too loose. In my ignorance and early days of Vincent ownership I managed to take out all the center run rollers on two Tsubaki chains. John McDougal figured this out for me when I took the bike to him in my truck. TOO LOOSE was the immediate diagnosis. I check my chain more often now especially when new.
