The wooden block has grooving to provide a secure fit.
The block travels/fits in the space at the tail of the Alton.

I am asked all the time at coffee/lunch shops if this is a Black Shadow.
And of course you know my answer. LOL

Actually Nigel it does not depress the spring any further as the eye bolts thread into the spring claws and have no effect on the spring itself. Think of it as the spring claw being a nut fixed inside the spring box. Screwing the eye bolt up or down the has no effect on the spring just makes the whole assembly longer or shorter.
Yes of course you’re right Robert, not quite sure why I thought it depresses the springs but shortens the overall length of the box.

I don't see it listed at Spares, must be a limited collector item.
I have a wood block similar to Bruce, but it is becoming more difficult to pick up as I patina.
I have them fitted to my two Comets and find them very satisfactory though they require some fettling to fit. On my Rapide I have a rolling propstand called a Steib which obviates the problem.
