Period Factory Photos

We’ve all seen the Vincent factory photographs before, but I thought some forum website users might like to see some other manufacturers.

The Douglas factory was enormous. Then in the twenties a road tester was cleaning the inside of a mudgard with a petrol soaked rag and poof! most of the factory was destroyed.

Great pics ! Some rarities in the background of some of the photos. How about a shot of factory/dealer only/shop tools/tool boards ? I have an eclectic array of OEM dealer only tools for '20s-'60s Harleys and the same for '50s-'80s BMWs but rarely have I seen anything for Vincent.

Looking at the photos of the HRD assembly line that Graham Smith selected for us re 1946-8 with the
rear Sub Frames ready to be mated up,what happened in the winter months when we had the power cuts
did the factory have its own generator or did production stop or were S/N s noted after assembly easy to
have made mistakes in those trying conditions. Our power cuts in the grim north lasted for quite a while
during that period.Aside to that I remember my sister being removed from her pram along with the wheelbarrow
to look for coal in the local sidings, heat before electricity. How did the factory manage. Gordon Ryley

Those were the Glory Days of British Engineering. When You Guys made things When Made in England meant something

then a long came the politicians and screwed that up
