I want to fit a new capacitor to a comet magneto. Which capacitor or pair of capacitors are recommendet? Erik

Brightspark Magnetos do one that fits in the points section rather than inside the armature, you have to disconnect and bypass the old one inside to do this.

I tried this but was not really satisfied because I could see some sparks at the points. Some years ago I fitted a pair of capacitors to an other instrument but i forgot the type of capacitor which was recommended by a specialist. The capacitor has not only have the right capacity but shoud be shock and temperature resistant as well for the life inside of the rotor.I beddet the capacitors inside the rotor in methylmetacrylate for rigidity.

there was a very good drawing somewhere, Brightspark website?, that I used to make up bearing puller, invaluable.

More, possibly, than you want to know:

Erik,
you want capacitors tolerating AC current in magnets, unlike coil ignition with one positive end on coil never changing in rotation. So the "selfhealing" WIMA MKP types will do the job. You look for max. AC rating like 1000 V but the size is your limit in the old mags with rotating coil. So 0,22 myF and ca. 630 V AC will do, higher AC voltage types will be too big.
To be open, I don´t have much faith in cool fancy caps from the bikers´scene as I don´t expect them to be robust enough at high AC voltages in the long run, seeing the very small sizes of these.
