For a strange French one there is a place near the south coast of France called 'sx fours les plages'.. To a simple englishman this translates as 'six ovens the beaches'. Clearly there is something that a simple englishman does not understand.

Ypres is a tough one.
How about the good old English place, Beaulieu? If you don't already know how the English pronounce it, you'll never guess.

Hint: if you know anything about French, you have no chance of correctly pronouncing it.

A village in Kent ...
Speaking of Kent, the author of an article in the just-published issue of the quarterly magazine 'The Margate Mercury' sent me a pdf this morning, where I'm quoted on the optical reasons for the quality of light in that seaside town. Luckily, it was for print, because if I pronounced the name I'd have said 'mar-gate', which certainly must be totally wrong.
