Being curious, I looked up "Wings Day" and found this at the RAF Association site :
"... preparations for the very first Wings Appeal in 1951 and calling out for volunteers across the globe to spare an hour or two to support the first nationwide series of ‘Wings Day’ collections. It talked of the need to raise £20,000 a year to cover the cost of the Association’s welfare work for serving and ex-airmen and airwomen all over the world. Thankfully thousands answered the call, and the Wings Appeal went from strength to strength."
