I onlny have one thing to add
I punched my first computer keyboard in 1976, I wrote my first program in 1978,and used search engines in unix before the web had got going .IMHO there is still nothing to compare in detail with the information I can find on my bookshelf, the internet is wonderful (and yes unlike most I know how to really structure a search phrase) but its information at a detailed level is mostly uncoberated, often copied, unsubstatiated and fragmentary and should be used with care.
For my money the path should be:web, books, and then forums and the clubroom
