dynamo drive sealing

I have the generator sealed completely to the chaincase. The gearbox stays at a constant level, the chaincase stays at a constant level and I use usually about a 1/4 of a pint in 1000 miles of engine oil.
That is definitely a Lucas commutator end bearing housing, bakerlite brush cover and split commutator cover.

I had the ever-varying chaincase level problem. Not good news to let it run it dry...

Following the SOP, I invariably put too much oil in, and a pool of oil formed on the floor as it drained back down. It seems to be a real razor's edge operation. So I took out the level plug, and replaced it with one that projected into the chaincase. Open the inspection cover, and it is easy to see if the oil is up to the screw, or below it, or over it. Add oil until the screw JUST disappears, and you've got the level 3/16" too high. I can live with that, and it seems to make no difference anyway.
So, save hours of back-breaking toil...
