Right you are. With new parts there's the buy-ing, and then there are the various other -ings required before they actually fit.

I have come to expect the fitting and fettling part of the equation and that part of it is fine. There are lots of variations in the bikes and I’m fairly sure there was a lot of sifting through the bin at the factory and select fitting. Assuming that is the case, it would make it hard for the manufacturer to make a “one size fits all” part every time. It‘s the ones that are obviously screwups that drive me nuts.
