Are you sure that you do not have two balls or rollers between the two parts of the pushrod? If not then the pushrod is too long and there is absolutely no problem shortening it. It sounds like you do not have the needle roller thrust race mod so you still have the adjuster in the middle of the outer plate. That can easily compensate for a small error in the length of the pushrod. Saw off whatever length you need of the pushrod, get the new end cherry red with a blow lamp, or whatever you have access to, and then while red plunge it into a container of cold water. That will re-harden it.
