British Standards for Workshop Practice, 2nd edition, 1946, confirms what you say, The kickstart ratchet is splined. The kickstart shaft is serrated. One slides, the other shouldn't.

Hi Derek,
A buddy did it for me, as Trev has explained it needs a dividing head, and lots of time unless you have an auto like he has.
