Howard, it is far more likely that it was realised that the core diameter of a 3/16 BSW thread was too weak to resist spring tension reliably, and a finer thread was chosen to add strength.

Hi John,

I think you missed my point. I don't know the component in question, but threads could be changed for various reasons, perhaps the fine thread was used to stop it vibrating loose etc. My point was, we're discussing a time when finer details weren't set in stone, and what we see as an improvement/modification, could well be due to a fitter using "initiative" which could never happen today - on a modern production motorcycle anyway.
