Are the soldered joints butt joints or lap joints? Either way, they must be fitted rather well for a good job of soldering.

Do you use different solder for different parts of the tank? Someone told me that is the case but they may have been bullsh1tt1ng me :)

John McD did mine.

Stainless is cleaned with emery and then using a Eutectic flux especially for stainless it is tinned with the "new" no lead solder. Same with the steel part but different flux. Then the joint is made using 50/50 lead solder which melts at a slightly lower temp. Then the cover strips put on with 60/40 solder as it melts at a slightly lower temp again. Not many have the skill, patience or experience to do that these days. Radiator shop used to have BIG soldering irons that were suitable, but around here they are a thing of the past, although I did find a place that still made new ones for several hundred $$ a piece. John did mine with a torch.
