One of the highlights for me from an early German Rally was riding my 'A' Rapide alongside John on his 'A' Rapide and the engine notes going in and out of sync. Pulling up at a junction and car drivers fascinated by these two old machines with the hair pin springs whirring up and down.
John's very pregnant wife on the standard pillion pad of his bike. could have resulted in an emergency stop !
When we moved to Dorset for a short time we soon discovered that John's brother lived a few doors away.

Ye gods that's a sight not for the fainthearted!
The pipe is the first one he hand carved.
Only this very morning I spoke to the old cumudgeon about us again meeting up - after we had exchanged views on illnesses and 'getting fixed'.
I can safely report he is still in fine form and has now become somewhat of a legend in the traditional folk song world.
After all these years he still owes me a beer.
