Using a mid to late fifties sideline (Slimline? Ed) frame with the center stand bolt pivot ears removed from top of the lower frame tubes. Engine sits too low to weld in new ears. Looking for an alternative center stand that can be adapted to fit between lower frame tubes and can fabricate mounting brackets or ears and weld them in where needed. Any suggestions for an alternative stand that is shorter in height than the original Norton stand and can be fitted.

Bob,

I was thinking that an old /2 BMW might work. Victor's brother has one and a few other bikes sitting in his garage. Victor might ride over with a tape measure?

I hope all is well in VT!

Take a look at John Mossey's norvins, he welds a pair of "ears" to the rear of the lower frame rails and fits what looks like a Dave Hills type stand.

Slimline featherbeds came in model year 1960, so a featherbed from the fifties is a wideline. Exact model is easy to get from the frame number. If (unlikely) the frame number contains 10M or 11M the frame has never had any centre stand lugs and is made from chrome-moly alloy and is brazed, not welded.

David: I’ll take a hike ofer to Michael’s and check out the /2 stand. He’s 44minutes south.
Roy: never occurred to me to look at Mossey’s work on his new frames, but I can see what he does and that does look doable.
Thanks gentlemen, appreciate your input.

Mike: good info. The welded base of the lug triangles remain slightly proud of the tubing where they were removed. I’ll look at the number.

I’ve done two center stands on both a slimline Triton and a wideline Norvin, both use a modified /5 BMW centerstand. The stand itself needs to be narrowed from its original, if you are able a cadavered /5 frame will offer you the associated tabs that can be welded to the frame, baring that tabs can be fabricated. The springs and associated bits are all available from BMW suppliers, as you can se in the photos, it is a very compact system that is very inconspicuous both up and down and it is a very light weight stand,

My R100/7 centerstand works fine with just one spring, so that would save $$ and weight!!
