Digging up parts.....
I have an Alton generator from (by the cog at the end) a Comet
its stamped V1766
1. are all Altons single phase?
I also have a Podtronics regulator marked 200W 16-08
2. is this compatable?
3. is this the newer regulator type that prevents current leak when stationary?

The best people to speak to are Alton-France tel: +33 298 283 575 or mobile +33 786 573 428
They speak English and are very helpful.

The regulator is a Podtronic, so yes to the question that it will stop leakage when the bike is
stationary and the engine not running.

There were some three phase Altons made. They did not work properly. The single phase Altons have two output wires while the three phase one had three wires.
There is also a single phase Alton that had an internal transmission with plastic gears. That one also did not work well. The gears would eventually lose their teeth.
The very early single phase direct drive unit seems to have been a good unit. The present day production unit, made from about 2010 on, also single phase and direct drive, is a good unit. It's similar to the original Alton but has higher output at low rpm.

I thought I had a charging issue with my Alton Podronic set up... most likely the late single phase one as Glen suggests, I bought from Alton direct about 5 years ago. I replaced the Podtronic with what looked like the same unit from a local Triumph specialist... It worked fine, two yellow wires and a red one.... so I'm thinking a Podtronic regulator with two yellow wires is the same for any alternator with the same wires coming out of it? In my limited experience the regulator that fits does the job, that simple...? As it happens, I never had a charging issue, my horn (that never worked anyway) was being intermittently shorted by the rear brake arm!! DOH!
