This photograph was shot at 0630hrs on speed record day, Monday 13th September 1948. The photograph shows preparations being made for the second north run which will officially start at 0638hrs. Rollie Free and Mel Held refuel the John Edgar Lightning, while Albert Held watches Bill DeMott (wearing white) install a spark plug. Behind Rollie is Ab Jenkins (dark glasses), future holder of numerous automobile high-speed endurance records set at Bonneville driving Mormon Meteor III. Meanwhile, on this morning a young William Edgar was at home in Hollywood, standing by for a telephone call from his father with news of the speed record that Rollie and the bike were about to break.
