I did however have the advantage that my pinions were off my camshafts. So I was able to set the timing marks to align and have equal lift at 5 degrees BTDC. Irving's book "Tuning for Speed" quotes Joe Craig as saying equal lift occurs between 4 and 6 degrees BTDC so I chose the middle ground.
