QUESTIONS. When did the works begin in house machining of twin Crankcases. Clearly not for a considerable spell. They lacked the machine tool plant. They were not able to find the skilled fitters and machinests jobs for a time as well. Bruce Main Smith wrote an article in a Trade publication in early 1948 detailing his visit to the factory observing that new tooling was just arriving. I suspect that much slipped past the written records . The export of prewar TT Replicas to the US postwar by the works to Rod Coates on the East Coast to enable him to race in AMA Class C racing with a Vincent and a Works spec TT BAR Burman gearbox racer to L. A. in So. Cal in 1947 I suspect there is no written record of those actions or machines. Yet I have personally been told by Rod Coates wife that PCV sent a TT Replica to Coates to enable him to race in the Daytona Beach races in 47-48 and other AMA races. The Prewar west Coast TT machine was raced at the Rosamond dry lakes speed races in October of 1947 there is a clear picture of it rider aboard in street clothing rolling across the lake bed in "Motorcyclist Magazine". The Blue Touring Rapide clearly reffered to in the Brit mtcy press at the British International Motor Show in April of 1950 has no notation that it was Blue. Relying on written records often crossed out, over written, or simply not recorded. When Irving himself in detail in his book writes there were 2 prototype Shadows . I'll go with Phils account thanks.
