Remember that these brakes come with their own widened brake drums so you have to fit those as part of the job. Vincent had some at the Hever rally and they are a beautifully made bit of kit.

Vincent can give you more details than I can but I know that the drums are 7" internal and are ribbed to look like 'Shadow' drums. There must be an increase in the weight of the drums as they are wider than standard. The brake plates are ali and machined from solid, i.e. they are not castings, so it will depend upon whether one is comparing them with the old electron plates or original steel ones. The brake shoes are also wider than standard so my guess is that there will be some weight penalty but on picking them up they do not feel to be excessively heavy. I have no connection with these items. I just happen to have seen them at Hever.

hello all,
we did do a redesign, as they were out of stock when at international in Italy.

and as i like to ride in the mountains, decided to make them a bit more the same braking force hot n cold, as the old ones were rather grabby when very hot... (ultimatly your braking power), so its down to heat dissapation, and than there is only more surface and air coming in-to the design, but did not want to end up more weight.
Standard is a braking drum wide of about 23 mm as there is a very big chamfer in the standard drums, i.e. they could easy be 27 mm wide.

so i ended up: new drums 7 finns, 32mm wide, 30mm effectively, btw. same weight as they are conical thinner to the cylinder drum itself (but same as original) and the outer diameter is bit smaller, by 3 mm.

shoes 30 mm wide, and optionally an air scoop to let air in.

i have now done a total 3000 km on both my bikes, and a very nice side effect is they dont squeak any more, i dont know why, so have to use the horn now.
we have them now in 7 wheels, and drums are all free from the spokes, even more as standard, as i do not have that strange offset just over the spokes...

thanx

Vincent

Vincent. I overheard you talking about air scoops with Andy E at Hever. What was the verdict and do they need an exit scoop as well? The lightning replica plates have entry and exit scoops and seem to work OK on the outfit.
Thanks Dave J

Hi Dave,

His verdict was its better to have a suction air scoop, and as I see now, could not agree more:p
btw Andy is always right, as is every vinnie owner. we all know, put ten on a row, and none is the same, hee they came out of the works that way.

Well I like to have, even some air into them, the air extis between drum and brake shoe plate. But its an option to choose.
I ve been up and down a mountain now and then, and like to have a bit better cooling, but in fact the wider drum, takes a lot too.
and its more a secure fact to have on it, as that I always brake like hells freezing over. but very comforting to know i can brake hard when needed.

regards

Totally agree that if you ask ten people, you will get ten different opinions. Very impressed with what you have done. See you on the 14th. Have a good trip.
