Before you take the cover off, After the pipes are off take that bottom screw out and try again ?,
Still could be the welding has upset it ?.
When I went home today, I had the exhaust, the gear indicator, kicker pedal, shifter, screw and the one nut securing the kicker cover off of the bike. The cover will not come off. If i squeeze the clutch lever, the cover moves in and out about 1/16th inch. Does the G98 kick start sleeve have to be removed? I don't want to pry with a tool and break the cover.

As you try and get the cover off, You tap the end of the kick start shaft inwards,
So that the Kickstart shaft stays where it should be, It can't come out with the cover because
It's held by the big spring,
You also have to disconnect the clutch cable !!

When refitting the cover, At the last 1/2" slip the Kickstart lever on the splines and move down a touch to help the cover go in all the way.

The photo shows a long one at the bottom, That's NOT on yours ,That is for left hand Kickstart.
Mind that K/S Spring , It's very strong !!, You have to unhook the spring to get the shaft and gear
off, You may not need to !!,
Fingers crossed.
