FF: Forks Width of Girdraulic fork

I was getting parts ready to built a new front wheel, when I found out that one of my hollow axles is much to short.
I then measured three of my forks.
One has a width of 6 inches plus a few thou, one is 6 1/8 and the 3rd one is 5 15/16 between the blades at the spindle location.
The only reason I can think of is a different height of the rim of the top hat bushes in the upper link.
This is the datum which dictates the number of shims used in conjunction with the eccentrics.

Is this a common thing or is something wrong with my forks.
What measurements do you have?
