Actually the Franc has been changed/re-valued to "nouveaux (new) Francs" in the very late 50's or very early 60's, can't remember when exactly.
So 500 000 1956 old Francs became 50 000 nouveaux francs a few years later, that's about 8000 of our Euros. Yes, it would have been a huge amount at the time but I believe these rallies where very popular back in the 50's which means a lot of entry fees.
