Valve guide composition

Bill,

I have always believed it to be very good because it contains graphite. If I remember correctly, I clearanced valves at .001 to .0015. They do not wear very quickly.

I really followed the pack on this one. Justin MacKay-Smith had a batch made in the 1980's, so it was easy for me to keep using them. I just asked Pat Manning and he said he too had a batch made and used them on his bikes. I was told that the thermal performance and expansion was very good for aluminum heads and they could be clearanced tight enough to avoid using seals. I think seal technology has come a way since then, but the guides always worked well for all of us.
