Upper frame member attachment

What is the normal clearance between cylinder head bracket and upper frame member lug's that fit over this for attachment. Is there a maximum clearance, and is fitting a shim a good idea.

Nil, it`s a slide fit. Maybe a push fit if you`ve painted the faces.

Yes it is series B type front attachment on a Comet.
The size of the head bracket is 2 3/4" So you can check that.
And I guess it might have pulled a chair at some time. I really do not think you ought to worry too much. Simply do it up tight, the head stem is malleable iron, so will close in without any problem.
