Anyone know what the red braking material was, from way back ?

I wish I knew!.My brothers Meteor has them and it flew through the MOT test last week.Good braking with very little pressure on the lever and progressive as well..John

Brilliant idea to use a master link.

I agree about the non-resonance of the brake drum. Especially with two separate brake shoes both pressing against the drum, I don't see how the drum would be able to resonate. If you touch the wine glass somewhere else besides the rim, or press too hard with your finger on the rim, it will not resonate.

Easy to explain, the friction causing the resonance is the action of the fingerprint flexing as it is passed round the rim, notice you can only produce a sound with the lightest of touches, any more pressure negates the fingerprint. Try doing it with a smooth screwdriver handle, all you will get is silence.
