Hi Tim, fire away on here with your questions and you will get answers :)

Thanks Russell

Sorry for the slow reply; life's getting in the way.

I'm completely new to the marque, having acquired this from my Father, who is now in a care home.

This particular model hasn't run since it was rebuilt a few years ago. I know nothing about whether the valve clearances are correct or even how to do them. Same for the timing.

I've just been busy reading up, cleaning, greasing and generally getting to know it. I would just like to be able to get it to a position where I feel comfortable attempting to fire it up

Pic from the bench!

You have a very desirable bike there, do you have any details on who did the rebuild, it can make a huge difference to what is going on inside, if the bike has stood idle since the rebuild, and the rebuild was done properly you should not have touch the valve clearances to get it going, but it would be advisable to follow certain procedures for pre-oiling the engine before attempting to start it, there could be a few dry surfaces in there that would definitely benefit from being well oiled before starting it.
