just fitted new magneto pick ups to my dads egli. when putting the top pick up in the carbon brush decided to fall off into the slip ring housing:eek:
tried to get it back out without any joy.
how do i go about disassembling the slip ring?
does the casing split at the points end or is it a magneto out job?
thanks

Hello Grant, If you cannot find the brush by looking in the bottom pick up hole with a mirror you will have to remove the mag.
The mag splits at the points end just remember to mark the end cap for reassembly. Also remove the 2 safety gap screws that protrude into the slip ring, or you will break the slip ring. If you pull the armature out in theory the mag will need re- magnetising. Good luck John.

tried to find it in there but no joy so i think i will have to split the mag.
if i unbolted the mag end could i spin the housing round to allow the brush to fall out or could this cause damage?
you say in theory if removed the mag would need re-magnetising... how would you know if it did?
how would you re-magnetise the mag?

Hello Grant, It was necessary with older Mags, but KVF mags had better magnets and I am not sure if it is essential.
Perhaps one of our more knowledgeable members can help.
If it is necessary it will have to go to a magneto specialist. John

Hello Grant, A further thought, if you remove the mag it may be possible to shake the brush out without stripping the mag. John.

Hello Grant, The shape of the Slip ring is a deep valley, I don't think the brush can get any where else in the mag' Because of the high sides,Push a bit of cloth or foam around inside with a small screwdriver or bit of bent wire, It should come out the other hole, If not check between the mag' body and the crankcase it may not be inside after all,!!! also check the floor . With that little spring they can fly. All The Best Bill.

This reminds me of "a thread" on the A.J.S. forum recently-a chap used a pencil to find top dead centre-and guess what? he broke it off-the answers on how to get it out were sometimes unprintable! I've taken mags. to pieces many times and found no loss of magnetism.

Checked the floor as well as i could and also checked on the crankcase with a torch with no luck.
I also pushed a bit of wire round inside but never thought of pushing some foam or a rag through. Very nice idea that i will try it out thanks.
