I think the engine I had off Ted, Must have been a Grey Flash !! She did 99.8 mph at the end of a flying 1/4 mile, In road trim with me!! on it. Lots Of Fun, Bill.

Maybe the Works supplied 96 'engine only' for specials and e.g. Cooper cars ??

Poor Ted gets some stick. I only met him a couple of times and quite liked him, mind you, I never bought a "Lightning" off him.

I met him a few times and quite liked him. He sold me my first Vincent and I got 17 miles from Letchworth before it broke down. All good entertainment and education. I was, however, surprised to learn, thirty years on that someone else had a Comet engine with the same number and that the crankcase matching numbers on both made it likely that the other one had not been restamped.

And since we were only dealing in near scrap back then (I actually once took a F106 of a belt leading to a furnace skip) I dont suppose he thought twice about it.
That summer house in his garden could have told some tales....

Near scrap? I didn’t know that you’d seen my Comet.
If it was of negligible value why bother to restamp it?
I didn’t know enough to check for matching numbers and, then as now, just wanted a bike to ride.

Seems a shame to me that all this is on a public site when there is a club site available. Perhaps I am just a born worrier.

I have had to bite my tongue a few times as posters slagged of Ted's name. It was always a pleasure to meet him and do business with him. Nice to see I am not alone.

1946 3-19 = 16 Vincents
1947 20-400 =380 Vincents
1948 401-1400 = 999 Vincents
1949 1401- 4980 = 3579 Vincents
1950 4981-5730 = 749 Vincents
1951 5731-8250 = 2519 Vincents
1952 8251-9570 = 1319 Vincents
1953 9571-10,000 = 429 Vincents
1954 10,001- 10,300 = 299 Vincents
1955 10,301- 10,587 = 286 C Vincents
1955 10588 -11,134 = 546 D Vincents

11,121 Vincents total from this listing of engine numbers

Maybe my resources are wrong, but something doesnt seem right about the 1949/1950 production listings for engine numbers.

It just seems like there are a couple thousand Vincents missing from 1950 production reporting, and waaaaaayyyy too many Vincents reported for 1949. Can someone find the actual data that is correct?
