Vibrac. Michel's bike in question which started this thread is a series A Comet. The series A uses a gear oil pump which is well known to allow oil past and sump.

I take it you are referring to the Velo when you speak of gear pumps not the oscillating worm gear ones so beloved here. Since one thing I am sure of is that it does matter where they stop due to design and wear and if you don't think Velo pumps leak you are not a regular reader of Fishtail.
I interpreted Richard's post as saying that gear pumps do leak.:confused:
The plunger pumps used by Ariel and Triumph is a type that is less likely to leak unless there is debris under the ball valve.

Or the springs underneath the ball bearings weaken or break with age and use.

I am talking about the gear pump of the series 'A' that is the subject of the initial post. As usual, forum threads becoming unravelled.
