Oil Filter Screw Cap Valve

What's the purpose of the small sprung valve in the centre of the sprung plate on the oil filter screw cap? I can understand the plate being sprung to allow pressure release if the filter got blocked, but can't see why a small valve operating the other way (i.e. feeding into the filter) would be needed.
Thanks.

Hello,
The plate is to hold the oil filter in place. the oil from the pump is to the outside of the filter. The small sprung valve is the relief valve. John.

Aha... the reason I was unsure is that a Venom (which I'm more used to) works the other way round, with the feed inside the filter and with the club paper element the whole filter lifts against a spring as a pressure relief valve.

Typical Velocette! wrong way round, even the clutch is behind the final drive sprocket, and on the road bikes the push rod motor is faster than the OHC
PEI obviously did not stay there long enough :)
