In fifty plus years, I have never seen a timing cover come off with a free piston. When you consider what the maximum pressure could be, and you can refer back to some of Neville`s articles on that in MPH, you think it could compress the spring enough to open it. Really theres no pressure in the supply, merely flow, and not much of that, but for us, enough.
Any surplus would flow out of the quill back into the case before it ever opened the valve. Also the bore in front of the valve acts as a sludge trap, that`s why they`re always seized.
