I used a light ball peen hammer but with an unscarred ball. It still had its original factory polished ball. Many, many light blows and constant checking seemed to do it.

Curiously the builder evoked a side of me that neither of us had known existed. He has not been seen for a long time.

The science goes like this-it's likeley cheaper to buy a new one than pay a specialist repairer £60 per hour to mend the tarnished peice of "history" (read poop) that you are trying to preserve. Go spend some money sensibly for once!
