My experience with a D6 didn't fair as well as yours. One day, when starting my Rapide for the first time that morning, I suffered a kick back, probably from a lean mixture. A little tickle on the carbs and she started on the following kick but with no charge showing on the amp gauge. A quick diagnoses had me pulling out the D6 only to discover that, when the generator turned backwards,the well worn brushes had neatly pealed the commutator coppers off like a sharp chisel.

Not too pleased at this behaviour, I installed an ALTON which has survived
well under the overload of electronic gizmo's I have subjected it to over the following years.
