The mag is driven by a chain from the front camshaft, which is driven the same way as a post war twin, so turns the same direction as the crank, so same as a B C or D it is upside down with the generator underneath and behind the HRD cover that can be seen between the exhaust pipes.

Hi Robert

If that is the A you restored, you did your self proud, very nice. Some parts chromed that were not chromed but done with taste.

Cheers Max

The trip that you are planning , is it the rout 66 one?

Hi Robert.
I would think clockwise magdyno's are a rare thing, other than your the series A the only one I can think of is the bevel driven 11.50 Brough but that is tight wire advance with a twistgrip whereas you want a slack wire advance.
Possibly the only way would be to build one from parts. I'm not sure if the armatures are different (with regard to the keyway postion) between clockwise and anti - clockwise or if it is just the points, our magneto specialists should be able to tell you that ( is a clockwise KVF armature different to an anti - clockwise K2F ?).
I'm looking to build two anti - clockwise 50 degree magdyno's with tight wire advance for myself so I'm hunting parts to make them.
Chris.

I have an idea that the post war Douglas T35 and Mark series were clockwise (need to check)
I have a soft spot for them I think I was the last one to race one in a production class when the Vincent blew up and I did not want to loose my entry fee -needless to say I was last
Let me know if you get stuck I am a member of the Douglas Club

The A twin does run tight wire advance, so am used to that. I think making one run the other way involves changing a few parts such as the position of the safety screws, the slip ring, cam ring and points, but I'm sure it can be done, I just need something to start with!

now let's get thinking lateraly....
As the mag casting for an MSL is identical for either single or twin, if you had most of the makings of a mag you could machine a pickup mount on the blank side( the outline is already there) change the slip ring to a twin one fit a twin cam(looks the same as a K2F but ground away on the inside edge to clear the bearing housing) and find a clockwise points carrier for a K2F.It doesn't look difficult to do the machining, the mag would have to be refurbished but if you found the right one then you would have to do that anyway..John

The build sheet just says Lucas -- No help there. I see a BSA single one on ebay but it has dowels on the base not tapped holes. Ok now I'm getting picky. keeps your eyes open.

I have a spare single body for a MSL single mag and possibly an armature that would need work if that helps..John

There is a guy here in Wichita that has a lot of old magneto/ dynomo stuff, I have written down what you are looking for, he might have something, I know at the last swap meet he had lots and lots of the old stuff.

Cheers Max
