Surely it's not impossible that the piston pulls the rod instead of pushing it, is it? Looking at where the fluid entry is it just might..john

It's pulling the arms together. It is the infamous "comical hub" as on my '72 Bonnie. Normally cable operated and rubbish!

On an early Suzuki twin they had a hydraulic foot operated brake which operated both front and rear wheels. They also could operate the front brake by cable.

This one is less obvious on how the shoes are spread, maybe wee cylinders inside? Also, assuming that is an endurance racer, the headlamp looks pretty small for 3 AM racing.
