How do you strip the speedo drive on the front wheel - 1952 Series C Rapide

Hi, I've read Know thy Beast but wanted to check how to do this job before I start dismantling. The speedo is running erratically on a newly restored machine and I've checked everything else.

I've undone the two screws holding the unit to the brake plate, removed the split pin holding the gear wheel on and removed the second split pin through the two sides of the bottom casing.

Now examining it I wonder how it next comes apart to be able to clean properly, lubricate and re-build.

The two pieces internal to the casing have notches in them as if you could, wth a special tool, insert and rotate them to take them out. Know Thy Beast seems to suggest you drift the shaft out from the other side.

Which is right?

Then there is the female section of the spade assembly - do you drift that out or does it come out the other end?

Advice gratefully received?

Thanks

Stuart

Quite simple, tapping the spindle where the pinion goes will drive out the plug that incorporates the grease nipple. Once that's out a drift inserted where the cable goes will drive out the other plug. On reassembly tap the plugs in just enough to take up end float but ensure everything turns freely in both directions:) L.M.

speedo drive gear box

Stuart,
Having got the gear box appart, if you look up the vertical hole you should see a grease channel that should be clear, but is usualy filled with compacted crap. This should be cleared, thus allowing the spindle to get its fair share of the lubrication.

Len,

Many thanks, I'll give that a go now - cleaning and lubricating without stripping has made a significant improvement - so I imagine that a proper strip and clean should do the trick.

Appreciate your assistance thanks.

Thanks Norman, assistance for the capable, enthusiastic but lacking in Vincent experience much appreciated.
