One can see the effect that David describes by looking at the graph in my posting, #8 above. Looking at the standard curve one can see that the top approximately 2" of movement is more or less exactly what is needed. That is vertical and slightly rearwards. Whether Vincents ever did this exercise to come up with the shortened springs we will probably never know. If one wanted to copy it now with David's short springs it would be a good idea to arrange the damper/eyebolt lengths in such a way that the forks could never drop down into the dangerous range.
