Holding a DTI to set the valve timing - two styles of holding device.

First two photo`s used an old inspection cap with a turned insert held with " Lumiweld "

Last two photo`s show a fully turned holder.

No dimensions are given since this depends on the DTI . A word of caution , the Grub screw at the side needs only to be FINGER TIGHT otherwise damage to the shaft of the DTI will result ( been there already ! ).

Or you could thread a bit of aluminium round bar 1/4 BSP, bore it to suit the DTI shaft and glue it on with Loctite, it is then screwed into ET24/3 breather cap and locked with a thin locknut. Cheers, Stu.

While we have a thread for 101 ways to hold a dial gauge;;) the above are wonderful with the engine out.
Let us see some configurations for with the engine assembled and installed in the bike.
(Or someone do the search and point us to the best threads that already show this.)

DTI and magnetic base attached to the oil tank set at the tappet adjusters. This does not give as accurate a reading as over the valve method, and it also will not show the true lift at the valve. Example........A Mk 2 cam showing 0.330" at the cam lobe will generally show 0.380" at the inlet valve.

But it will show the point of equal lift....

That is how I've done too and the equal lift at 4º BTDC method works for virtually any cam configuration.:)

You Mean Like this? Good quality magnetic bases on the UFM, taking care to make sure the indicator shaft is co-axial to the pushrods. When done I replaced the standard tappet adjustment screw with the allen key version sold by the club.
