I am a new member of the Club rebuilding a 1949 Black Shadow. Having taken advice fom the Club as to sources I have ordered an electric starter kit from Francois Grosset. He is asking whether I require +ve or -ve earth. I am prompted to seek opinions and advice on this and also on the matter of generator or alternator (ie with the appearance of a generator) My objective is originality in appearance together with sensible improvements which have been tried and tested.

I would recommend negative earth, as it is the standard used by virtually all current vehicle manufacturers. All the original equipment will work on either polarity but modern equipment and accessories are likely to be negative earth only. Some devices are specially made positive earth for use on old vehicles but you will generally pay a premium for them.

I am with Ian on this one. I can't tell you how many owners have hooked up the battery wrong and fried expensive components. Do what comes naturally, negative earth.
