Comet Help Please!

Thanks for the info on converting my timing cover.

The Ebay one went for a whopping £240 in the end - far too rich for me.
There's a chance of a swap with another forumee for a Comet part, but if that doesn't work out I will follow your advice and modify the twin cover for now.

I was hoping to be able to report plenty of progress following the weekend, but I found on Saturday morning my lock up had been broken into, fortunately nothing was taken and they closed the door behind them. They had tried to steal my other bike, but gave up as soon as they rolled it off its stand and found it was chained up – no damage thank god.

Anyway, bikes and tools are now moved to a more secure location, all locks replaced and extra fortifications installed for what’s left, but another weekend lost. :(

I should have known when I made that comment about making a section meet I'd be regaled with tales of 14 day hikes across the Andes for the weekly Bogata meeting... ;-)

Maybe I should have added, I work... an awful lot (I was still here at 10pm on Friday) and I have a 50 minute commute anyway – I’ll stop there as I’m just making excuses now...

I will make it, and hopefully this week... thanks for that warm welcome Eddie, I’m looking forward to meeting you all asap.
I’ve been on the web site (excellent btw), so I have some directions thanks.

I was actually on my way last Friday, until SHTF at 5.00pm - as it often seems to do here!..
It would be great to be included on the email list too – I’ll PM you about it now.

Bye for now,

Mike

I thought that the price of the timing cover might prove too steep. If you decide to peen, you might be interested in the following picture. The peened hole is the feed to the cylinder. I believe this was done by the previous owner who wished to direct more oil to the cam rather than the cylinder. In the case of a twin cover both of the aft holes could be closed up.

The members living furthest away from the Section meeting place here in NSW would take over 10 hours to drive the distance. A couple of the guys have planes but landing costs in Sydney are ridiculous. You people in the UK don't realise how lucky you are when it comes to service and socialising! An hour to Coventry? We can only be jealous.

It's a hard life, when you can't afford to land your plane! :)

I would have thought that affording to take off was more of a problem. Once you're up you can't park it:eek:John

Eureka she's a runner!

Not only that, but after a blips of the throttle it settled down to a steady tick over - I'll even admit to a cheeky test ride up and down the street, so I've had my first Vincent ride.

A big thanks for all the help and advice I recieved here, I'm confident now I'll be ready for Mallory and be able to take my place in the VOC parade

One thing that does concern me a little is the whine from the timing chest. I know they are not the quietest of machines, but does this sound normal?
If I didn't know otherwise I would say the gears are too tight in mesh, but when I was I fitting the new timing gear I was careful to make sure that it would slide in and out, but without any appreciable backlash.

I'm presuming the gear teeth are lubricated simply from pick up on the half time pinion from oil at the bottom of the timing chest.
Is that the case?
I must admit I'm struggling to get my head around the lubrication system...

I'm going to get another gasket and have the cover off to have a look anyway, so I shall try and see what's happening (or not) then.

Many thanks again.

Well done Mike. Look forward to seeing you at Mallory if not before. As for the noises, I always wear ear plugs.;-)

The favorite cause of a whine in the Comet timing chest is the dynamo gear in too close a mesh with the large idler. As Clev Tre pointed out a long time ago you should install the dynamo when setting up the 'zero' backlash in the timing gear(I didn't and had to re-do the job). You could try slackening the dynamo clamp and wiggle the dynamo a bit to see if the noise reduces..John

Thanks chaps :D

John, I did consider that when I was putting it together, but it might be worth revisiting it, doing as you say, and seeing if it helps - Cheers.
Ed, Sorry I've not managed to get over to the section meeting yet. Fridays are not working out to be good for me just lately...
I'm away this week, but the following Friday I'm home and off work, so in theory there's nothing stopping me - hopefully see you then.

Thanks again so much

Mike
