I take a different view.... Evening all, It might appear that I was suggesting that you load the local telephone directory onto the Forum but twas something else in my mind when I suggested encouraging like minded individuals to join - goodness knows that one of them you rustled up might even have been an existing VOC member who had not used the Forum before. Logic tells me that in order for someone to register for the Forum then they must have some reason for doing so. Moving to one side for a moment all the odd folks with reasons I might not be able to comprehend or agree with then my deduction is that people who register will largely have an interest in things Vincent. Personally I think that people using the Forum who have an interest in Vincents is a good thing. With luck (like at least 1 Forum member I have now been able to verify - and no it was not "Flatout" who it appears hasn't joined, gone to the York Section or submitted his bike details - Oops!) they may move on to join the VOC as a result of the way they are treated and the decent people they have met across the ether. So I'm a big fan of making them feel very welcome and helping them where ever possible, and then encouraging them to join the VOC because there is a compelling set of reasons to do so, not the other way around where they are kept on the outside until they've paid their dues. There is a view I've heard that VOC members are a strange and elitist band - that hasn't been my personal experience but looking to the future (and back to the objects of the club) we must bring in new members, and that will mean younger members too. Just what does the future look like for the guardianship of these wonderful machines otherwise?. From what I've seen since re-joining we don't appear to be very good at attracting new and/or younger members. Me, well I think the Forum has the potential to become one of the very best ways of doing just that as in today's world the internet plays an every increasing role in the way people do things. So I support it. I can't think of a single website where I've gone for a look, seen I need to pay £28 to "get in" and subscribed. Not everyone with an interest in Vincents is either fortunate enough to own one, or in some cases I guess would actually want to. Maybe they aspire to owning one, one day. I'd like to propose that there is space enough in the our world to accommodate them all. Surely the Forum is about furthering the objects of the club - and I don't think membership of the VOC was one of them last time I had a read. I think that having the Forum open to all is in perfect harmony with those objects - have a read and see what you think? I'm biased, I'm a new member this time around, I'm mechanically inexperienced with easy access to a computer at all times of the day and night, I've joined the club because it offers me something over and above the Forum so I do both like a lot of people I guess - but I've found the Forum tremendously useful in a whole host of ways even though I've bought, devoured and digested a whole boxful of books and MPH backnumbers. On the flip side - I've joined Jtan and not found it helpful or interesting (yet) - but I'm still reading. What a great world we live in where having an opinion is encouraged and perhaps we should all manage to rub along together despite them being different. Beyond the "blown vincent" thread that I never clicked on - what exactly is it that non-members have been having access to/posting or anything else that is causing problems? Or is the issue that they simply don't pay? Regards to all Stuart
