chrome plating question

I have some new special non Vincent exhaust pipes in mild steel (they were too convoluted for stainless) I want to braze or weld some small stainless parts to them
I understand you can chrome stainless with some preparation but can you chrome a composite item?

Yes but it may depend on the plater. I had the rear brake wing nuts satin chromed and they were brass with stainless inserts. The only issue I was told is the chrome may flake off the stainless in time which was not a concern for me.

I made a tank and the guy who did the top welds used a stainless rod and the three platers I tried said they couldn't do it. Can't you use something other than stainless for the inserts.
