Chain Lengths

This is probably a very naive question and probably because I am enumerate but how does one calculate the chain length when using a different rear sprocket. In my case a Rapide with standard gearbox sprocket and a 56 tooth rear wheel sprocket? I'm fed up with try it and see.

Thanks Phil and Roy. That's what I was doing but something went awry. 'Mummy' always said 'measure twice and cut once' but somhow I still ended up with a chain too long.

better too long than too short like I did , I had a friend 40 years ago who worked at a chain company ,his main chain on his Velo was made up from left over bits ,he always had 4 to 5 split links in his chain and it never did seem to break.
