Careful giving out contact info

I know most people that frequent forums are aware of this, but as a reminder, a recent incident related to the Lightning replica at auction caused grief for a Vincent owner. Someone interested in the bike being auctioned contacted VOC member A, who then asked VOC member B if anyone could provide advice to the originator (nothing wrong with that). VOC member B readily supplied name, phone number, and town/state (not full address, but still) of VOC member C, without asking member C if it was okay to give out that info. Member A provided the details to the originator, likely assuming it was okay to give out the info.

The fault lies with member B, not checking with member C to see if it is okay to give out the info.

Please do not give out contact details for people without their express authorization. It is a simple courtesy, and respects privacy. Even if a person has given you authorization in the past, it would be nice to ask again and provide the details of the situation, they may change their mind depending on the situation, but also just to let them know to expect being contacted.

To echo Steve's comments it is also not good idea to put your email address, telephone number, etc in the text of a post. If you want people to contact you put a note in the post for them to make initial contact with you by starting a private conversation. You do this by clicking on the posters name that is found under their avatar and then clicking on "Start a conversation".
As some people on this forum have already found too much contact information in public is likely to invite junk mail and scammers.

A constant problem for us as membership secretaries, we get some oddly phrased enqiries and have to make some judgment. A sad reflection on the world today where you have to treat everyone with suspicion.
We would never divulge any members personal contact details to anyone, we would pass on the contact of the person asking and leave it to them.
