Martyn, the pb/eq number used by Shorai is not the same as amphours. According to Shorai,(it takes some hunting to find this) actual ah of their batteries is about 30% of pb/eq. So the LFX 18, a common size, has 5.4 ah of electrical capacity. You can also get actual amphours of the Shorai battery by converting the watt/hr number on the packing to amphours, just divide watt hours by voltage. The resultant number is about 30% of pb/eq. Very misleading advertising ,but as long as one's charging system keeps it rolling along, who questions such things? At least Ballistic gives both numbers, pb/eq, 20 for their 12cell, and "actual AH,", 6.5 for the same 12 cell.

Have got the battery back on the bike after topping up and giving it a fast charge witha 4 amp charger.
All cells were bubbling this time.
Just been out for a very short spin as it started raining and the ammeter is showing a higher charge now.
Hoping that the battery will be ok.

Looks as though the battery just needed topping up. Lights are bright now and it seems to be holding a charge. Not sure why there are instructions on the battery stating:
Never remove sealing caps even when charging
No refilling with water will be required.

Thanks all for the advice regarding batteries and charging. Will come in useful when a new battery is needed.
