Stretching the thread to turning corners on a motorcycle, I always remember a story (the content will date me) in the 'Green un' or the 'Blue un' about a motorcyclist who was claiming damages because he had been brought off his motorcycle on a roundabout because a car had gone on the inside so close (and here is the real dating bit) that the forward open ended car door handle had caught in his RH gauntlet and hauled him off. The Judge reduced the damage awarded because he said the motorcyclist was leaning from the vertical in the corner. The article said that any noise heard in the court was not the bikes wheel bearings but Sir Isaac Newton turning in his grave.

I was an Accident Investigator specialising in motor cycle accidents, and frequently appeared in Court as an Expert Witness. On one occasion a witness claimed a motorcyclist was out of control because he was "leaning right over" on a corner. Another time I had to explain to a Court that it was necessary (for a solo motorcyclist) to put his/her feet down when stationary! It transpired that neither the Judge nor the witness had ever ridden a bike, let alone a motorbike! On a different note in response to a question "How did you get to the site?" a witness, an elderly woman, answered "By Shanks's Pony" where upon a young Barrister leapt to her feet and demanded "M'Lud this is the first mention of a pony, I must take further advice from my Principal". Fortunately the Judge could advise the meaning of Shank's Pony to "Jane Nice But Dim".

I realise that our bikes no longer require an MoT Certificate but, if indicators are fitted, do they need to fall within current MoT rules?
I fitted a pair of these tiny LEDs to the rear of an eighties bike as the original stems interfered with the carrier I was fitting. I mounted them through original grommets in the tray that carried the rear light. I was happy that they were visible and safe, outboard of the rear light but inboard of the carrier, but they caused a fail as a new rule states the the illuminating parts of the lenses must not be closer together than 190mm.

All these modern LED blinkers and so on are way too small. If you are going to install some, fit good sized ones, it might just save you and your bike if your lucky...........Most modern cars have pathetic lights too, especially the tailights........... I don't know how all this stuff passes the correct reg's. With modern motorists so distracted by everything but driving, the need for maximum visibility is a must.

50% of my bikes are old or are ex racers and dont have electricity to run winkers another 25% dont even have a speedometer. (legaly) most have a rear mirror one doesn't have even that but then it doesnt have a clutch either
I rely on road position and judgment and the fact I am never in town with them.
